The festive season is a time of warm weather, long days, and holiday celebrations. The annual work party is your chance to show off your style while keeping cool and comfortable.
Work party style during the Australian Summer can be a balancing act. You want to look festive without overheating.
Here are five fashion tips to help you stay stylish and cool at your work party this Summer.
Start with a Statement Piece
Every great outfit begins with one standout item. It’s easy to choose one piece, such as a lightweight linen blazer, or a fine blouse in a vibrant colour, or a pair of statement earrings, and then build your look around it. This both anchors your outfit and also makes it easier to put the rest together. And to be honest, on those days where you simply can’t decide what to wear, starting with an inspiration item is a quick hack to whip up an outfit.

For an outdoor venue, try a bold print blouse (e.g., tropical theme) with tailored or Bermuda shorts or a sunray skirt. If you have a waisted body shape (find out through a Personal Style Consultation), add a belt to keep things tidy. The blouse takes centre stage while the rest of your outfit stays light and comfortable. Finish off with dangly earrings and bangles. This approach ensures you’ll look effortlessly put-together but can handle a little perspiration.
Embrace Light, Seasonal Colours
Summer calls for lighter, airy colours that reflect the season. Choose the softer pastels, whites, and blues in your colour palette. These shades not only keep you cool but also add a fresh, festive touch to your image.
Consider a light blue wrap dress paired with nude accessories. The colour palette feels refreshing and festive, perfect for a Summer event. Or, if you prefer neutrals, add a pop of colour with a pink / coral handbag or a pair of light green sandals. These delicious colours just makes us enjoy the warm weather all the more!
Comfort Meets Style
With summer temperatures soaring, comfort really is key. You’ll be on your feet, mingling, and enjoying yourself, so select outfits that are both stylish and breathable.
Consider open-toe sandals or stylish flats that allow your feet to breathe. A flowy maxi dress is another great option, offering both comfort and sophistication. Prioritising comfort doesn’t mean sacrificing style, but you do need to be smart about your choices so you can enjoy the event without feeling restricted. To do this well, you need to understand all the specifics of your body and preferences (see Personal Style Consultation).
Subtle Sparkle
For evening events, think about how you can introduce subtle shine into your outfit. Sparkle doesn’t have to mean head-to-toe sequins. Instead, select a metallic clutch, a pair of shimmering earrings, or even a touch of highlighter on your cheeks can add just the right amount of sparkle.
For instance, a light, breezy dress paired with sparkling statement earrings and kitten heel slingbacks strikes the perfect balance. It’s festive enough for the occasion but still comfortable and appropriate for a work setting.
Tailor Your Look to the Venue
Always consider the venue and vibe of the party when planning your outfit. A rooftop bar or waterside venue usually calls for a more relaxed, Summery look, while a formal dinner definitely requires something elegant and polished.
If the event is at an outdoor location, consider something light and airy, like a sleeveless jumpsuit with espadrilles or wedges. Or even a linen vest paired with matching pants for an elongating, classic and cool outfit. For a more formal setting, you might choose a sleek dress with peep toe low heels or fancy strappy sandals. Tailoring your outfit to the venue ensures you’re dressed appropriately, essential to feeling comfortable in all environments.

Bonus Tip: Mood
This is something often overlooked. Your outfit will impact your mental and emotional well-being so it’s about feeling good too. You are participating to hopefully enjoy yourself as the main priority.
Leading into the holiday season I’ve noticed a certain life intensity at play. Work pressures are high, social commitments are in full swing and there is this rush to fit it all in before the public holidays. So here’s how to make your wardrobe work for your wellness:
- Choose fabrics that feel good on your skin. In the humid heat, lightweight and breathable materials like cotton, linen, viscose/modal/lyocell are your best bet. They keep you cool and comfortable, helping you stay relaxed and confident throughout the event. Unless they are a small part of a fabric blend, be wary of things like silk, satin, polyester, nylon, acrylic.
- Wear colours that make you happy. Colour psychology is real. Surround yourself with hues that lift your spirits and make you feel energized. Feeling a bit drained? Try wearing something on the brighter side of your colour palette, like a yellow or a light green to inject some energy into your day.
- Dress for your body, not trends. When you wear clothes that fit well and flatter your shape, you feel more confident. Skip the trendy pieces that don’t resonate with your style and stick to what makes you feel strong and beautiful. Know your style. Know your body’s features. Be judicious with your choices.
- Prioritize comfort without sacrificing style. This isn’t just about shoes, it also means considering the cut of your dress or the fit of your trousers. When you’re comfortable, it shows in how you carry yourself – more relaxed, more confident, basically you come across as comfortable in your own skin. You are signalling to others than the inside and outside are congruent, which has a soothing and trustworthy energy.
