For amazing personal style and image, the little details do count.
While clothing, accessories, and grooming are often at the forefront of discussions, one critical yet often overlooked element is your scent. As an image consultant, I’ve seen firsthand how a carefully chosen fragrance can elevate presence and overall image. Here are some practical reasons why scent is so important for a good image and how you can harness this powerful tool.
Creates a Lasting Impression
Our sense of smell is closely linked to memory and emotion. A pleasant fragrance can create a lasting positive impression. Imagine meeting someone for the first time and their perfume leaves you with a lingering sense of warmth and elegance. You can achieve the same effect. Choose a signature scent that reflects your personality and style. For instance, a light floral scent might convey a sense of femininity and grace, while a spicy, woody fragrance can exude confidence and sophistication.
Example: For a business meeting, Chanel No. 5 is a timeless classic with a blend of florals and aldehydes that leaves an elegant and memorable impression without being overpowering.

Boosts Confidence
Wearing a fragrance you love can significantly boost your confidence. When you feel good about how you smell, it naturally enhances your self-assurance. This confidence shines through in your posture, the way you speak, and how you carry yourself.
Example: On a stressful day or before a big presentation, a spritz of your favourite perfume can provide that extra bit of confidence. Opt for something with notes of lavender or vanilla, which are known to have calming effects. Perhaps consider Dior J’adore with its luxurious floral bouquet that is both uplifting and empowering.
Complements Personal Style
Just like your wardrobe, your choice of fragrance should align with your personal style. Scent is a part of your overall aesthetic, and it can either harmonise with or detract from the image you’re trying to project. Consider the vibe of your wardrobe and choose a fragrance that complements it.
Example: If your style is classic and elegant, Lancôme La Vie Est Belle with its notes of iris, patchouli, and gourmand is a perfect match. For a more casual, sporty look, Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue, with its fresh citrus and apple notes, is ideal.
Sets the Mood
Scent has the power to set the mood and influence your environment. Whether it’s a romantic dinner, a day at the office, or a casual outing with friends, the right fragrance can enhance the experience for you and those around you. Just as vibrant colours can energise and bolden an ensemble, fresh and citrusy scents can add a zesty and invigorating touch, while soft, pastel colours paired with floral or powdery fragrances evoke a sense of elegance and sophistication.
Example: For a date night, choose a scent with warm, sensual notes like sandalwood or patchouli. These can create a romantic and inviting atmosphere. For a day at work, lighter, fresher scents like bergamot or green tea, such as Elizabeth Arden Green Tea, can keep you feeling invigorated and focused.
Attention to Detail
Wearing a thoughtfully chosen fragrance demonstrates that you pay attention to the finer details of your image. It shows you take care of yourself and are considerate of how you present yourself to the world at large. This can be particularly impactful in professional settings where good first impressions are essential.
Example: In a job interview, wearing a clean, sophisticated scent can suggest professionalism and meticulousness, qualities that employers value. A perfume such as Hermès Terre d’Hermès Eau Très Fraîche with its refined woody base would come across as professional and understated.

Practical Tips for Choosing and Wearing Fragrances
- Different for Each Skin: Skin type, pH levels and body temperature are unique for each person. These factors can affect absorption levels and potentially mean the exact same fragrance worn by two different people can smell entirely different. Never assume a perfume that you have admired on another person will also work for you.
- Test Before You Buy: Always try a fragrance before purchasing. Wear it for many hours to see how it interacts with your body chemistry. What smells good on a paper strip often does not smell the same on your skin. I personally had an experience trying out a perfume. I loved it on immediate application and still enjoyed after a couple of hours. But then its longer-term base notes shifted to something less pleasing after 5+ hours. Be aware that perfumes will change during their wear.
- Less is More: Apply perfume sparingly. A couple of eau de toilette sprays on your clothing or pulse points (wrists, neck, behind the ears) is usually sufficient. Some perfumes may only require a single spritz, due to the strength of their notes and their concentration (e.g., eau de parfum, parfum). You want your scent to be noticeable, not overwhelming.
- Consider the Occasion: Just as you wouldn’t wear a ball gown to a beach party, choose your fragrance to suit the occasion. Lighter, fresher scents are great for daytime and casual events, while richer, more intense fragrances are better suited for evening and formal occasions. Summertime is ideal for lighter, more citrusy or floral scents. Winter can be the time to use your heavier and more intense perfumes.
- End Date: Yes, perfume expires at some point because it does contain organic compounds. Signs to look out for include smelling less potent, discolouration, off-notes, a sour or metallic scent. To keep your perfume fresher for longer, store in a dark, dry place and apparently the ideal temperature is between 12 and 22 degrees Celsius.
- Rotate Your Scents: Having a few different fragrances for different moods and occasions can keep things interesting and ensure you always have the perfect scent for any situation or mood.
Scent is a powerful and transformative element of your image. It’s more than about smelling good, it’s about expressing your emotional self and making a memorable impression. By choosing your fragrances thoughtfully and wearing them with intention, you can leave a lasting impact of your image wherever you go.
