In the competitive environments of today, how you present yourself professionally matters. A strong presence not only opens doors but also commands respect and authority. Whether you’re stepping into a boardroom or leading a team, the way you carry yourself has enormous impact.

Why Presence Matters

Imagine walking into a room and instantly magnetising attention, not because of what you say but because of your “aura”. Understanding and mastering it can transform your career and actually your life in general. This isn’t just about wearing the right attire, it’s about the overall package that includes your posture, your voice, handshake, etc. Research[1] shows that people form first impressions within the first 0.1 seconds of meeting someone, an impression that is lasting and difficult to change. These judgements can significantly impact relationships and opportunities.

Presence isn’t about being the loudest or most dominant in the room but about projecting competence and a “centred” energy. Some people seem have a natural confidence and presence, the rest of us need to work at developing it. Just like any other skill, it’s within our power to grow.

Components of Presence
  1. Posture and Body Language

Your body language speaks volumes before you even utter a word. Standing tall with shoulders parallel to the ground exudes a “centred” effect. Avoid slouching or crossing your arms, these can signal unsettled emotions such as defensiveness or disinterest. Instead, adopt an open stance to show you are approachable and engaged. The assumption is that a calm and stable exterior reflects the interior state. You don’t want to signal markers of aggression or fear (unless your deliberate intent is disruption).

Example: During a meeting, a confident posture can make your ideas seem more credible. Next time you present, stand up straight, make eye contact, and use hand gestures to emphasise your points. This will help you appear more authoritative and trustworthy. Practice in front of a mirror. If this makes you particularly uncomfortable, that’s perfect! A sign it’s worth developing the underpinning skills of presence further.

  1. Communication

Clear and concise communication is key to commanding respect. Speak with conviction, and do your best to avoid filler words, pause and gather your thoughts instead. Your tone should be assertive yet respectful, and it’s essential to listen actively to others.

Example: In team meetings, practice speaking up clearly and directly. PREPARE your points beforehand to avoid rambling and the concern you won’t be able to contribute. Listen attentively when others speak. Think about their perspective, rather than what you want to say next.  A great technique to develop the required patience is being the very last person in the room to communicate an opinion. By being the last to speak, it is usually what people remember best. An added bonus is that the last person to speak is usually perceived as the one with most power.

  1. Attire to Advance

Your attire plays a crucial role in how you are perceived. Dressing appropriately for your industry and position demonstrates that you understand and respect the professional environment. It’s about wearing clothes that fit perfectly for you and are suitable for the occasion.

Example: If you’re attending a business training, remember it’s an opportunity to form new connections for sales prospects or perhaps a better job! Maybe skip the jeans and T-shirt, instead go for a well-fitted but comfortable dress or trousers with shirt/blouse combination. Pay attention to details like polished shoes and minimal accessories. Your appearance should reflect the level of professionalism you wish to project.

  1. Emotional Intelligence

Understanding and managing your emotions, as well as those of others, can significantly impact your professional presence. Leaders with high emotional intelligence generally navigate workplace challenges effectively and build strong relationships with ease.

Example: During a conflict, remain calm and composed. If it’s at all possible, take some time out to go and process your emotions FIRST. Then let your brain get to work analysing the situation. Check to see if you have resolved the elements which potentially inflame thought processes, such as being overwhelmed, time-poor, hungry, dehydrated, etc because these can skew the brain into more extreme perception.

If you feel your head is steady and not hijacked by other factors, you may be ready to acknowledge the other person’s feelings and address the issue constructively. This approach not only resolves the conflict but also reinforces your position as a respected and authoritative figure. Good leaders know how to slow down during intense moments and important decisions, understanding that rushing doesn’t tend to lead to good outcomes.

  1. Preparation and Knowledge

Being well-prepared and knowledgeable in your field builds credibility, as well as soothes a lot of fears when it comes to speaking up, presenting, giving/taking instruction. When you demonstrate expertise, others are more likely to respect your opinions and decisions. But also be aware that those with the deepest knowledge are least likely to elucidate for the purpose of ego, instead they communicate knowledge when necessary, with good timing. This is a particularly effective method of being perceived as a valuable subject authority and naturally confident.

Example: Before attending a meeting, plan some quick research on topics to be discussed. Prepare questions and potential comments that will support understanding and insight. This preparation will help you contribute meaningfully, supporting the meeting purpose and progress. It further demonstrates you appreciate and respect other attendees’ time.

The Power of Aura

Your aura, the subtle energy field that surrounds you, plays a crucial role in your professional interactions. Your aura contributes to these first impressions, affecting your credibility, confidence, and approachability. Here’s how to use the key elements that make up your aura.

  1. Appearance: First layer of your aura

Your appearance is the most visible part of your professional presence. As expanded on in previous articles, dressing appropriately, maintaining good grooming, and selecting outfits that reflect your personality and values significantly impact how others perceive you. As an image consultant, I’ve watched how a well-curated wardrobe transforms a client’s mentality, actions and how others respond to them. So curate your wardrobe, choose outfits that align with your professional role and personal style.

  1. Body Language: Silent communicator

Your body language is an incredibly powerful form of communication. Confident but comfortable posture, steady eye contact, and purposeful movements convey authority and self-assuredness. One study[2] revealed that adopting powerful poses can increase feelings of confidence and reduce stress.

Effective communication goes beyond the words you use. Meta-language includes vocal tone, pace, speaking with conviction, listening actively, and articulating your thoughts. They are all skills we learn during formative years but can always develop further throughout our adulthood.

  1. Mindset: Core of your aura

Your mentality underpins every aspect of your professional presence. Believing in your own worth and abilities forms the foundation of a strong aura. This self-assurance projects outward, influencing how others perceive and respond to you. As mentioned before, it’s important to check the physical and emotional states are sound and stable, because they have major impact on your cognitive processes and abilities.

When all these layers align, a powerful aura is created that commands respect and authority.

Commanding respect and authority in the professional arena goes beyond job titles and industry skills. It involves cultivating a strong professional presence, an aura that others can perceive and respond to. Your professional presence is your ambassador, an underpins your reputation across many people. Make it work for you.
