I used to think snagging a bargain was just smart shopping. Who doesn’t love getting something “on sale”?

But over time, especially as I began reshaping my relationship with personal style, I realised the real thrill of the bargain hunt wasn’t about the money saved at all.

It was about control. And a subtle attempt to outsmart something I didn’t fully trust: scarcity.

When I look back, I can see how this mindset was formed. I watched people in my early years who were hard-working, careful, doing their best to stretch what they had. There was pride in finding a deal. It wasn’t just about thrift. It was validation. You’d done something “right.” You were clever, sensible, good with money.

So of course, it stuck.

Emotional spending habits

For years, I carried that same bargain instinct into my own life, even when I was earning well. I’d hesitate at full-price items, convince myself I was being responsible, and tell anyone who’d listen that I’d “found it on sale!”

But I’ve learned bargain-chasing isn’t actually about abundance. It’s about fear of loss. It’s a way of trying to feel wealthy without actually allowing ourselves to be wealthy. Wealthy in mindset, in self-worth, in how we value our time and energy. In other words, bargain-hunting is one of the ways we try to short-cut to wealth to feel abundant instantly, but without building the real substance behind it.

And here’s the kicker: it gives a little emotional high.

That quick hit of dopamine when you “win” the deal. The rush of saving $100 on something you probably wouldn’t have bought otherwise. We think it feels strategic but it’s actually quite reactive.
You know the way we might reach for comfort food or scroll endlessly at midnight? It serves the same function to soothe a deeper uncertainty for a moment (before it fades).

But do you suspect we’ve now built a whole culture around avoiding emotional discomfort? We’ll do almost anything not to feel the sting of uncertainty, loneliness, envy, or shame. We stay busy. We chase distractions that feel productive. A sale, a scroll, a project, another “fix.”

Conscious wardrobe choices

That avoidance is what quietly robs us of growth. Because discomfort is the entry point to change and character depth. It’s the friction that shows us where something new wants to form.

Conscious wardrobe choice

When I started getting more intentional with my style, I realised that the same avoidance showed up there too. The bargain habit wasn’t just about saving money. Instead it was about soothing discomfort. The discomfort of not knowing what suited me anymore. The discomfort of aging. The discomfort of wanting more.

I forced myself to sit with that, instead of shopping, numbing, or rationalising. I was opening the door to change. Because once I could face discomfort without needing to fix it, I could finally start choosing from honesty and clarity, instead of reacting from emotion.

When I began changing how I approached my personal style, this is where some serious mental rewiring began.
I stopped asking, “Is this a good price?” and started asking:

“Is this the woman I’m becoming?”
“Does this feel like a 10/10?”
“Does this match MY personal values?”

That shift broke the bargain loop. It helped me spend without guilt, with real joy and lingering satisfaction. To see that sometimes, paying more is the price of alignment. And that it was not indulgence. But it would take consistency and persistance to change with conscious wardrobe choices.

Yes, I’m still reprogramming those neural pathways. Because these habitual thoughts run deep and sneak up everywhere! Like spending 15 minutes comparing almond milks (I’m not even joking), hesitating to book the nicer hotel room “just in case,” or feeling secretly proud when I stretch one bottle of shampoo into eternity. Ugh. When I re-read those examples, I cringe a little at my former self. But maybe that’s a good sign. They say if you’re slightly embarrassed by who you used to be, it means you’re growing.

But every conscious wardrobe choice and every intentional investment is proof to trust in creating value, rather than chasing it. You can move from reactive to intentional shopping. Together we can clarify your personal style understand what truly represents you, and start building a wardrobe and image that reflects the woman you’re becoming.

So if you’ve ever found yourself circling a sale rack or adding five “almost right” items to cart, pause and ask:

  • Does this bring me closer to the woman I’m becoming… or keep me stuck where I’ve been?
  • Am I buying the bargain… or buying the story I tell myself about being clever?
  • Am I choosing what genuinely honours me… or what simply feels safe?

Am I choosing to trust my intuition or am I afraid of getting it wrong?

Because when we stop chasing bargains and start choosing ourselves, that’s when real wealth – and real style – begins to show up.

Have a think about it.
