It’s not what you wear; it’s how you wear it. I could take identical twins in the same outfit, but they could appear very different based on their physiology and charisma. Posture, how you project yourself and how you position your body in space, is a key factor to your appearance.

When it comes to making a lasting impression, we focus on what we wear and how we speak. Of course, this makes a lot of sense. But there is more to transforming your image. And there is a way that we can uplift our style without spending a cent: posture. Your carriage immediately communicates your level of value, professionalism, attitude, health (physical and mental), and perceived age.

Professionalism

Whether you’re engaging someone important, attending a job interview, or giving a presentation, your posture is a silent indicator of your professionalism. Hunching can give an impression of discomfort or limited interest. On the contrary, standing tall and sitting upright conveys that you take yourself and your responsibilities seriously. It’s a subtle but impactful way to demonstrate excellence.

Non-Verbal communication

It’s long been understood that much of communication is non-verbal, potentially 80-90%. If you’ve experienced my services, you will know there is so much our image and brand portrays to those around us, and the value of great style that is authentic to our personality.

Your posture also conveys a strong message without saying a word. Leaning forward during a conversation signals engagement and interest, while crossed arms may indicate defensiveness or resistance. So try and remember your posture as it can support your intended message.

Health

Beyond its impact on perception, maintaining good posture also has health benefits. Slouching for extended periods can lead to back and neck pain, affecting your overall well-being. In a healthy position, our spine naturally creates an “S” curve from the base of the neck to the lower back. But of course so many people in the modern day present with a “C” curve, a slouched posture with shoulders forward and little contraction of abdominal muscles. This is a weak posture, and impacts our internal organs, muscles and skeleton, further contributing to many health disturbances.

Value and esteem

Picture someone walking into a room with their head held high, shoulders back, and a straight spine. It exudes confidence, and confidence is magnetic. People are naturally drawn to those who carry themselves with assurance. An Australian study demonstrated that bodies with naturally upright posture were perceived as more attractive, with higher self-esteem. Now consider how this tangibly translates into monetary value and employment.

Energy and age

Ever noticed how someone who puts effort into standing tall instantly looks more stylish? When you think of someone stooped over with a hunch, what age range do you assume they are? Good posture adds an effortless elegance to your appearance, making even the simplest outfit look more put together. But clothes lose impact if the posture communicates low energy levels and poor mobility. Unfortunately the inability to maintain posture at rest and during movement is a marker of physical aging.

It’s easier said than done to sit and move with good posture when the behaviours are ingrained over decades. And we no longer have the clothing staple for many centuries (corsets) to support us. But it’s worth trying.

So next time you select your outfit of the day, don’t forget to bring your best posture with you. You don’t want to waste a good outfit with slumped posture. You are marketing your image, your brand and your health to the world at large, so maximise your full potential.

“Good posture takes inches off my waist. I have a feeling of lifting my rib cage off my hip bones, of flattening the space between my navel and my backbone. If you stand sideways in front of a long mirror you can see how eliminating a slump gives a more youthful line to your body.” Vera-Ellen
