Something shifted this week in Brisbane. The air felt lighter. The sun, warmer. Daffodils started pushing through like they knew we were all ready to come alive again.
For me, that’s always the cue that Spring/Summer is around the corner. And so logically, it’s time for my seasonal wardrobe refresh.

On instinct, I headed to the shops. And let me tell you that the new season collections have started landing hard. There’s a definite S/S mood already forming: fresh tailoring, optimistic colour, playful accessories, and plenty of relaxed but elegant sihouettes which still feel elevated. It’s the sweet spot I always keep an eye out for it, especially when the silhouette is ideal for my body shape and it’s proportions. It’ refreshing for me to be able to choose from many options I know are a good possibility for both my specific body and over 40s style.
I came home with three dresses that made me beam. Each one was a full-body YES. Immediate 10/10 rating.
And when I tried them on again at home, overcome with guilt? Would you believe it? Still a 10! That’s when you know it’s not just shopping to avoid an uncomfortable emotion or a quick dopamine fix. It’s genuine alignment.
What I added to my wardrobe (so far)
3 hero dresses. Versatile, flattering, and distinctly different from each other.
2 patterned neutral scarves. Mini tote bag in black and beige. Neutral, polished, small enough to be playful.
Neutral Samba sneakers. Because I value fashion and function. And they are still on high-trend.

Mimco Mini Bowler Crossbody Bag in Pink Dust
I also spotted a candy pink bowler bag that made my heart skip. I haven’t said yes yet, but it might happen. I even reviewed my full handbag collection (yes, here’s a photo below) to see if there’s actually a gap for a punchy coloured bag this season. Verdict: possibly. And if so, I want to fill it intentionally.

When you know it’s a no
But let me be clear. Although I didn’t try too much on (only 10 dresses in total), not everything I tried was a win.
There were a couple of short dresses I’d rather forget. I was loosely aiming for a French provincial vibe (which aligns with my style personality), but what I got was… middle-age crisis. Honestly, the look was embarrassing. Necklines too wide. Bust far too exaggerated. The overall effect was what I’d call blowsy. Attention was pulled straight to areas I usually like to style with intent – like my bust and upper arms – but instead it just looked like I’d borrowed someone else’s idea of “sexy”. My neckline isn’t in its 20s anymore, and that’s not a bad thing.
It just means I’ve learned what earns its place on my body.
A quick pivot later to longer, maxi styles and I saw much better results. Even then, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Some of the cuts were too soft and peasant-like, with gathered bustlines and horizontal seams that widened and shortened me visually. Overall patterns and shapes that clashed with my more refined, structured style preferences. I want elegance with ease (not frump in disguise please). Even the colourways of some pieces were slightly too bright or warm for my palette, making them a colour palette mismatch and louder than I wanted to be. Or an overall colour “value” that was too light for me.
And this is the difference: when I try on items that actually match my colour profile, style personality, and style recipe. THEY FEEL LIKE A 10. They don’t need justification. They just work.
That’s how I know my styling process is sound. Style isn’t about guessing, it’s about alignment and acceptance of what works for all the little components that make up ME. And a 30% success rate is rather good, don’t you think? Which suits me because I don’t have the time to waste.

Fast wins, simple decisions, clear alignment.
Is it indulgent to buy 3 dresses at once?
Maybe. Perhaps.
But frankly if you try them on again, in your own mirror, and you still feel powerful, magnetic, and totally like yourself? When you’ve got the data from last couple of years confirming a great ROI for these type of dresses? That’s a green light. If you know in your gut there isn’t a single doubt on how good you feel and simply can’t wait to begin wearing the items immediately? That’s wardrobe harmony.
The reality is, of course, this means something else will have to go. That’s the deal I make with myself so I don’t return to my days of style overwhelm. So yes, a mini wardrobe declutter is incoming.
I’m not just a personal stylist. I walk my talk. I refresh my wardrobe every season before I’m desperate for something to wear. It’s part of what keeps me connected to my own creativity, my image, and honestly, my sense of abundance.
I get ahead of the game. So that when the weather officially turns, I’m not scrambling. I’m ready.
And that mindset shift – of being ready – dials down my style anxiety and makes all the difference. Everyday.
You can do this too
If you haven’t yet taken a moment to assess what you’ll be wearing when the weather changes, now’s the time.
Here’s where I recommend you start:
- Go through your wardrobe. Be brutally honest about what still excites you and what feels like a chore to wear.
- Review your outfit formulas. Are they current? Are they still you? Are they practical for how your life actually runs now?
- Read this: 3 Steps to Reclaim Clarity with a Wardrobe Detox. (I wrote this guide specifically for starting fresh and seasonal reassessment.)
This doesn’t need to be a total overhaul. It can be just a small collection of key, joyful updates that completely change your attitude and energy.
If you’re not sure what you’re missing, or what your signature looks for the warmer months should be, that’s where I come in with professional guidance.
