I still remember the shame.
I was sitting in a panel discussion as part of my corporate role in Queensland Health. The room was filled with recruiters. The conversation was about career progression. I should’ve felt proud to be there. But instead, I was deeply uncomfortable.
What I Wore
I’d thrown on jeans (unironed), a plain top, basic ballet flats, no makeup, and pulled my hair into a quick ponytail. It was a Friday. But still, looking around at the sharply dressed recruiters, I knew instantly:
I looked out of place.
The Realisation
I felt like I didn’t belong, even though I knew I was capable (and in fact led most of the discussions). And that’s when I understood how powerful visual impressions are. Even when you’re nailing your job, the way you show up physically can still hold you back.
The Turning Point
That afternoon, I made a quiet promise to myself:
I would never feel inappropriate or underdressed again.
Not long after, I literally booked my first session with an image consultant for a style reset. She was the right personal stylist to help me decode what worked for me. Over a whole weekend she did my colours, my personal style, full wardrobe edit and how to build an outfit formula that did the talking, even when I didn’t say a word.
Fast Forward to Consulting
Several years later, I made the leap from government into consulting. I took a pay cut to get in the door… but quickly noticed something else.
While my clothes were still technically “neat” and professional, they didn’t carry the same weight as my colleagues.
I didn’t feel confident meeting clients or senior leadership. I didn’t feel credible, even when I was saying all the right things and working so damn hard. Again, I was getting that uncomfortable feeling of being out of place with my attire.
So… I asked my mum to come shopping with me. (Yes, at nearly 40!)
It was humbling. But that corporate wardrobe refresh paid off, emotionally, professionally, and financially. I even started getting put forward for promotion (and yup, I was successful)!
Why I Now Do This Work
Those turning points shaped everything I now do as a certified image consultant and personal stylist.
