“I just want someone to tell me if this suits me.”

She’s educated. Financially sound. Well-travelled. She owns more clothes than she can count. And yet, getting dressed is still a daily irritation.

“It’s annoying,” she said. “I have too many choices.”

That wasn’t the first thing she said to me. But it was the most honest. Because deep down, this wasn’t about “not having clothes.” It was about feeling lost in her own wardrobe. It’s something I’ve heard from almost every client in some version. You’d think the more clothes you own, the easier it gets. But in my experience, it’s frequently the opposite.

The confidence crisis hiding in plain sight

This client reminded me so much of myself. Years ago, I used to dress in full corporate armour: structured dresses, tailored jackets, sharp heels. It worked. The formulas were reliable. I knew how to flatter my shape and command a room.

But eventually, I outgrew it, not just professionally, but personally.

What no one tells you is that power dressing can become a crutch. I’d clung to the silhouette because I knew it worked. I was afraid that if I stepped away from it – even a little – I’d lose my edge.

Would I still look sharp? Would I still feel capable? Would I still get taken seriously?

Then last creative Saturday (which, by the way, is when I do my best thinking), I tried something different.
I stepped outside my typical wardrobe choices and bought a leather moto jacket. It was everything I’d avoided for years: a little bit edgy, more casual, not my usual selection type

And it worked. I’ve enjoyed a lot of fun creating lots of new outfit combos with it and still remaining true to my dominant style personality.

It reminded me that style isn’t about repeating old formulas. It’s about aligning with who you are now, not who you were 5 years ago or who your job told you to be.

The role of style personality

One of the most under-taught elements of personal style is the idea of a style personality. It’s not about body shape or colour. It’s about your preferences and your energy.

Are you natural with a bit of drama? Are you feminine with a rebellious streak? Understanding your style personality means you can step outside your old go-to formulas without losing the feeling and impression you loved.

When style stops matching the life you’re building

Back to my client.

She wasn’t lost. She was evolving.

Try this: When you feel your identity shifting but your wardrobe hasn’t caught up, try this 5-minute inventory:

  • Pull out 3 items you wear weekly.

  • Pull out 3 pieces you never reach for.

  • Ask: What do I like about the first three? What do I resent about the others?

  • Challenge yourself to somehow wear the 3 rarely-worn items within the next week.

“I’m coming into my own,” she said. “Figuring out who I am, what I get enjoyment from. Padding and fattening out my life.”

That is not a woman who’s failing. That’s a woman in the middle of a major personal upgrade.
The kind of upgrade that, frustratingly, your wardrobe doesn’t always keep up with.

She said something else I hear all the time:

“I wonder how bougie do I go? I don’t want to go overboard.”

That tension between wanting to express yourself fully – but not be judged for it – comes up in almost every conversation I have with women in this phase of life. You want your look to reflect who you’ve become… but you also don’t want to be too much.

Let me be crystal clear with my position on this: There is no such thing as “too much” when your style is clearly grounded in your personality, your preferences, your body and your lifestyle.

Reminder: Feeling “too much” is often a sign that your current circle, job, or environment hasn’t caught up with your inner growth. That’s not a reason to shrink. It’s a sign to align.

Why the problem isn’t “too many clothes”

This client wasn’t drowning in dresses and pants. She was actually drowning in decisions.

Every morning, the same feeling:

  • Too many options

  • Not enough conviction

  • No real idea what to choose for this version of herself

It’s a problem I designed the 15 Minute Wardrobe Reset to solve. It’s fast. It’s clean. It pulls you out of the fog and gives you a place to start. We walk through what’s actually going wrong in your wardrobe and tailored solutions that are quick to action.

The 15-Minute Wardrobe Reset

Get answers with this personalised style toolkit. No more overthinking.

Fast wins, simple decisions, clear alignment.

Most women realise within five minutes that the clothes aren’t the problem. The real issue is they’ve never had a clear Style Personality or a modern “outfit formula” that works with their life now.

Quick formula example:
If your dominant personality is “Relaxed + Creative,” a reliable formula could be:
Structured jacket +  interesting print + comfortable pant +  artful accessories.
Note the point isn’t to be rigid. It’s to have a shorthand for looking like yourself without brain drain.

Why smart people still don’t take action

This client had another brilliant moment of honesty:

“I need to be pushed or prodded and for someone else to decide, because I already have enough decisions in my life!”

Exactly.

We are living in an era of decision fatigue. Women especially have enormous loads: managing careers, families, finances, health, ageing parents, global burnout, everything.
As employees. Business owners. Entrepreneurs. Spouses. Partners. Parents. Carers. Community volunteers.
You’re making 50+ micro-decisions before 9 a.m. Mental fatigue is already dragging you down.

No wonder you don’t want to stare into your wardrobe and strategise. That’s not laziness. That’s, in fact, resource protection.

The good news? You really don’t have to experience this when you choose something different.
This is where I take the load off you.

Wardrobe rule of three: If an item doesn’t fit at least 3 of these points, it’s not earning its place:

  • You feel good in it

  • It fits your lifestyle

  • It works with 3+ other pieces

  • You’d buy it again today

That’s the energy we want in your wardrobe.

The path forward (and why It’s not necessarily a capsule wardrobe)

Capsule wardrobes are overhyped if they’re not tailored to your personality. You don’t need fewer clothes, rather focus on better-aligned ones. Start with 5 “signature” pieces that scream you and build around them. And if you’ve already downloaded the 15 Minute Wardrobe Reset, you’ve taken the first step. If you’ve already had a Colour Analysis consultation, then well done! You’re halfway through your foundation.
If you want lasting change with a wardrobe that is unmistakably you to the core, you’ll need a deeper level of support.

That’s the point of a Personal Style Consultation.

We go into your shapes (body, face, etc).
We decode your dominant style personalities. Define your style recipe.
Which silhouettes, cuts, fabrics work with your proportions, lifestyle, and taste.
You get a Style Guide i.e., the future-proof wardrobe “bible” with all your answers.

And here’s the crux of the session:

“I just want someone to tell me if this suits me.”

That’s not helpless. That’s actually wise.
That’s someone who knows her time is better spent LIVING her life, not buried in returns and regrets.

Avoid this: Don’t make your wardrobe your decision lab. It should be your confidence bank. If you’re trying on 6 outfits every morning, that’s not “creative expression.” That’s friction.
