This weekend, I’m heading to the Gold Coast to reunite with old university friends. Long-term friends, the kind you bond with deeply while huddled over a stainless steel cadaver table in the anatomy lab (I’m not even joking). Some of these women I haven’t seen in years. All of them once knew me in a time of $1 coke cans, deadline panic, and desperate cramming moments (almost as we walked into the exam room).

Now we’re meeting again nearly 25 years later. Hopefully more grown, more ourselves, still deeply curious, and probably all just a little exhausted.

It’s a short trip, only a few nights, but I’ve been thinking through what to pack. The goal is simple: stylish and low-fuss. I want to feel good in what I wear, stay comfortable in the coastal chill, and not spend the weekend faffing around with too many outfit decisions.

The Gold Coast in July is always a bit tricky. Technically Winter, but with a lazy kind of sun that peeks through. Warm enough to walk by the beach, cool enough that you still want jackets with sleeves after 4pm.

Here’s what’s on the agenda
  • Beach walks and morning coffees

  • Casual meals with lots of storytelling

  • A nice dinner out (a seafood restaurant I’ve tried several times)

  • Stretching the legs, so PERHAPS light exercise gear required

  • Unstructured downtime and no wardrobe meltdowns

My approach to packing: Function meets feeling good

I’m building a tight winter capsule wardrobe for this and the guiding principles are:

  • Layering potential

  • Repeat wear without guilt

  • Polished, but relaxed

  • Everything fits in carry-on

I know a lot of women get stuck here. The “just in case” mindset kicks in. And that’s where I pause. Because when you know your style/colours/how to dress for your shape, you don’t simply pack more, you pack smarter.

What I’m packing

1. Base layers (x4)

A couple cotton T shirts in neutrals and can be used for exercise. One top a signature colour. And long-sleeved shirt that is very comfortable and slightly elevated. These work under jackets or on their own. They layer easily, extend across warm and cooler weather, and don’t crush too badly.

2. A jumper

My classic merino jumper in a flattering shape, I can throw it over anything, wear it out for coffee or lounging on the balcony. Bonus points: it hides post-meal bloat and still looks pulled together.

3. Two bottoms

  • One dark wash pair of jeans (casual + can be elevated).

  • One dark activewear legging (for beach walks, lazy brunches, or even the drive).

4. Two dresses

I personally love dresses, so decided to be indulgent and bring two. Something more elegant for dinner. I’m talking something that pairs beautifully with nice jewellery and red lipstick. This one single item transforms the whole suitcase from “weekend at the coast” to “I’m still magnetic.” Plus another dress that is more casual, but super comfortable. Both I can pair with a jumper or jacket for extra warmth.

5. Outerwear

  • One jacket in neutral colour (very dark brown) to pull together anything I wear underneath.

6. Footwear

  • Neutral trainers (for walking and casual hangs)

  • Nude but elevated flats (dinner-ready but comfortable)

  • Optional: minimalist slides if the forecast swings warmer than expected

7. Accessories

  • Statement necklace, day necklaces, several earring options

  • Crossbody bag in neutral colour

  • Sunglasses

  • Scarf in my colour palette (to keep neck warm or add polish)

8. Sleepwear and underwear

Comfortable but elegant pyjamas. I want to always feel a bit luxurious, especially during a nice hotel stay.

Key packing tips for short trips

1. Build outfits, not items
It’s easy to throw things into your suitcase. What’s smarter is planning actual outfits. Aim for pieces that can work in at least 2–3 combinations. If it’s a specific one-wear wonder, leave it behind.

2. Keep your colour palette tight
Stick to 2–3 base colours and 1–2 accent colours from your own colour profile. You’ll make fewer decisions and look more polished. (If you don’t know your colours yet… you know who to book with.)

3. Choose versatile outerwear
Coats and jackets are bulky, so make sure the one you bring works for both casual walks and dinner out. Structure helps. Your best neutrals help more.

4. Don’t pack for imaginary weather
Check the weather in the few days before leaving. Yes, it might get hot enough for a swim. But if that’s unlikely, don’t let your packing spiral into hypotheticals. Pack for what’s likely, not for every remote scenario.

5. Add one piece that makes you feel really good
For me, it’s the extra dress. For you, it might be a bold lip, a beautiful silk scarf, or a killer blazer. That one item can change your energy without taking up much room.

6. Prioritise comfort, but don’t sacrifice style
This isn’t about tracksuits for every moment. It’s about clothing that feels good on your body and makes you want to be seen. You can have both.

7. Pre-pack your accessories
Jewellery, scarf, and bag, They elevate even the plainest outfit and take up zero space. Bonus points if they add colour, texture, or contrast.

Mindset shift. Packing light is a power move

How you pack reflects how you see yourself. If you believe you can show up well with less, then you will. The overpacking urge often comes from doubt: What if I don’t feel good in this? What if this isn’t enough?

But when you know your style, and you’ve built your wardrobe with intention, it becomes easier to trust yourself, even away from your full wardrobe.

A capsule wardrobe for a trip like this isn’t just practical. It’s calming. It lets me focus on what matters, such as reconnecting with women who knew the younger me, and honouring who we’ve all become.

We’ve each evolved since the days of student budgets and late-night cramming. But a good outfit – one that feels right – still has the power to anchor us, to bring ease, to set the tone for a memorable weekend.
